Fence Cost in Jacksonville, NC

Fence cost in Jacksonville, NC isn't a single number — it's a stack of decisions. Two backyards on the same street can come in 40% apart because of material, height, gate count, and what's already in the ground. This guide walks through the factors that actually move the price so you can budget realistically and write a clearer estimate request.

Why exact fence prices don't exist online

Any contractor who posts a flat per-foot price online is either advertising one specific material/height combo or hoping you don't read the footnotes. Real fence quotes vary based on a half-dozen variables that only show up after walking the property. This page explains those variables so you know what you're looking at — and so when we (or anyone else) quote your project, the number makes sense.

Material cost factors

Pressure-treated pine is the most affordable common material and sets a baseline. Cedar costs more for the same dimensions. Vinyl carries a 30–60% premium over pressure-treated wood but eliminates most maintenance. Chain link is often the cheapest per-foot enclosure when galvanized; vinyl-coated chain link adds 25–40%. Aluminum lands at the higher end because of the ornamental finish quality. Wrought iron — rarely used in coastal NC — is the most expensive and least practical due to rust.

Linear footage is the biggest driver

The total length of fence is the single largest cost driver. Each linear foot includes lumber/panel cost, hardware, post-set labor, and crew time. Longer runs typically reduce the per-foot cost (setup overhead spreads across more length), while many short disjointed runs can cost more per foot than you'd expect. We measure carefully because guessing 200 feet when the real number is 280 makes the quote useless.

Gates add cost per opening

Every gate is its own mini-project: two reinforced posts, heavy-duty hinges, a latch, often a drop rod for double gates. A single 4-foot walk gate adds a few hundred dollars to the project; a double drive gate at 12-16 feet can add a meaningful percentage to the total. Tell us in your estimate request: how many gates, how wide, single or double swing, and do they need to fit a vehicle.

Height changes the math

Going from a 4-foot picket to a 6-foot privacy fence isn't 50% more cost — it's closer to 80–100% more because the post setting is deeper, the lumber is taller, and labor scales. Going from 6 feet to 8 feet adds another step up, and HOA approval often becomes a separate hurdle.

Terrain, slope, and obstacles

A flat, cleared, open backyard install costs less than a sloped lot with mature trees, tight access, exposed roots, or rocky pockets. Crews work slower around obstacles, and sloped fence lines often need stepped posts or racking panels. Pay attention to what's between the start and end of the proposed line.

Removal and disposal of an old fence

If the project includes tearing down an existing fence, demolition + disposal is its own line item. Coastal NC pressure-treated lumber from an old fence often can't go in normal residential trash — it goes to a transfer station or contractor dump. We bundle this into the quote when applicable rather than surprising you later.

Permits, HOA approval, and surveys

Permit fees vary by jurisdiction and aren't usually a major line item, but the property owner is responsible for confirming requirements with the City of Jacksonville, Onslow County, or the relevant HOA. A property survey — if the line is contested or unclear — is a separate cost paid to a licensed surveyor; we don't perform surveys. Confirm property lines BEFORE we set posts; correcting a fence built on a neighbor's property is much more expensive than verifying first.

Material-by-material cost ranking (relative)

From most affordable to most expensive, for a typical 6-foot residential privacy fence in Jacksonville: pressure-treated pine privacy → vinyl-coated chain link → standard galvanized chain link is cheaper but rarely used as backyard privacy → vinyl privacy → cedar privacy → ornamental aluminum. Pool-code aluminum lands above standard aluminum due to compliant hardware. Wrought iron is highest and rarely chosen here.

What to include in your estimate request for a faster quote

Send us these details up front and you'll get a more accurate quote on the first response: property town or ZIP; install vs. repair; fence material if you have a preference (or 'help me decide'); approximate linear footage; gate count and rough widths; height target; HOA rules if relevant; and 2-3 photos of the property line. Even rough phone-camera shots help a lot.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can you give me a per-foot price right now?

Not without walking the property or seeing photos. A per-foot number stated cold is either an average that won't match your project or a sales hook. We'd rather come back with a real quote that holds up.

Is wood always cheaper than vinyl in Jacksonville?

Up front, yes — usually 30–60% less than vinyl for the same height and length. Over 15–20 years, vinyl can be the cheaper choice once you account for staining, sealing, and post replacement on the wood fence. Depends on how long you plan to own the property.

How much do gates add to the price?

A standard 4-foot walk gate adds a few hundred dollars in materials and labor. Double drive gates at 12-16 feet can add closer to four figures. We size and quote each gate individually because hardware grade matters.

Are there hidden costs I should know about?

The most common surprises are: permit fees the owner didn't budget for; HOA requirements that change the style or material; existing fence demolition; underground utilities we have to dig around; and property-line corrections after a survey. We try to surface all of these during the estimate.

Do you charge for estimates?

No. We quote at no cost. Larger commercial or farm jobs may benefit from a brief site visit; residential quotes can usually be done from photos and a rough measurement.
